The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday named Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election in Odisha with ruling BJD announcing to support Vaishnaw’s candidature as it had done last time signaling the tacit understanding between the two parties.

The Biju Janata Dal had announced the names of Debashish Samantaray and Subhasish Khuntia as its nominees to the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP does not have the numbers in the Odisha Legislative Assembly to win the seat. With BJD announcing its support, Vaishnaw’s victory in the upcoming RS polls is a foregone conclusion.

It is a repeat of 2019 RS polls in Odisha as Vaishnaw was sent to the Upper House with wholehearted support of the regional party.

“The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will support the candidature of Ashwini Vaishnaw, union minister Railways, Communication and information and technology for the larger interest of State’s railways and telecom development in the ensuing election to the Rajya Sabha 2024”, BJD President and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said in a statement on Wednesday.

“With what face will we contest the assembly elections, only yesterday our leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan held meetings lambasting the Naveen Patnaik government as corrupt. Today we get messages of Vaishnaw being nominated to RS with support of the BJD”. We are finished”, said a cross section of BJP leaders venting anger against their central leadership.
