The BJP which bagged only two seats in the 2014 general elections in West Bengal is expected to touch double digits in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the exit polls have predicted.
The exit polls on Sunday predicted that the BJP could win 16 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal.
However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has been silent and the Congress and the CPI-M were dismissive of the exit poll predictions.
“We have been targeting more than 50 per cent of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. One of the exit poll (AC Nielsen) have suggested we could get 16 and the TMC 24. Final verdict will give the opposite to this exit poll. We will exceed our target of minimum 23 seats handsomely,” state BJP President Dilip Ghosh was quoted as saying by IANS.
Comparing the opinion polls that had earlier suggested 7-8 seats for the BJP, with the exit polls, Ghosh said there was clearly an “upsurge” for his party.
According to the CVoter, the Trinamool Congress is set to shrink in 2019 Lok Sabha polls to 29 seats, while the Jan Ki Baat has predicted a mere 13-21 seats for the party.
The Congress is likely to win 2 and 3 seats as per the CVoter and Jan Ki Baat, respectively, in West Bengal.
Most exit polls conducted by different organisations have given the BJP-led NDA full majority.
The majority mark is 272.
However, the exit polls in the past have not got the results right every time so the real picture will be clear only on May 23, when the votes polled at all 542 seats in the seven phases will be counted.
The results of the seven-phased Lok Sabha polls will be declared on May 23.
