As the government readies itself to ban polygamy in the state, opposition parties have called for greater examination of the bill.
All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) legislator from Mankachar, Aminul Islam, expressed reservations regarding the proposed bill to ban polygamy in Assam, stating that polygamy is not a matter of choice for individuals in the state.

Islam emphasized the need for a thorough examination of the bill, asserting that the situation surrounding polygamy in Assam requires careful consideration before making any definitive statements.
Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi alleged that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s push for the bill is merely a tactic to garner attention from national media and further his political ambitions, insinuating aspirations for the prime ministerial position.
Gogoi further criticized the BJP-led government, accusing them of consistently targeting minorities in Assam.
The bill to outlaw polygamy in Assam is slated to be presented during the ongoing budget session.
