At least 12 people, including three children, were killed, and 28 others were injured in a fatal road accident in Assam’s Golaghat district, officials reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred around 5 am at Dergaon on National Highway 37 when a bus carrying around 45 people, en route from Golaghat towards Tinsukia, collided head-on with a coal-laden truck coming from the opposite direction on the same side of the road.

Since reports on the fatalities from the accident are still emerging, the death toll may further rise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a relief of two lakh rupees to each of the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in the Golaghat mishap, PM Modi conveyed his condolences to the affected families and wished for swift recovery of the injured. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a road mishap in Golaghat, Assam. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected. Ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” reads PM Modi’s post on micro-blogging site X.

Assam Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya swiftly ordered an investigation into the horrific incident.

Expressing deep shock over the tragic road accident in Balijan, Minister Suklabaidya conveyed his condolences to the grieving families. He prayed for the early recovery of the injured.

Assuring comprehensive financial aid to the families of the deceased and medical assistance to the injured, Suklabaidya said the culprit responsible for the incident would face consequences. Furthermore, he vowed to file a complaint against the road contractor, attributing the accident to the substandard construction of the ill-fated route.
