Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated South Asia’s biggest ‘roll-on, roll-off’ (Ro-Ro) ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej in Gujarat on Sunday.

The ferry project is worth Rs 650 crore.

  1. The ferry service links Ghogha in Bhavnagar district in western Gujarat’s Saurashtra region and Dahej in Bharuch district in south Gujarat across the Gulf of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea.
  1. The R0-Ro service will reportedly shorten a 360-km distance to 31 km or a road journey of seven hours to one hour.
  1. The ferry can take up to 500 passengers. In subsequent phases, the ferries would also be able to transport cars and trucks across the Gulf.
  1. The idea for Ro-Ro ferry service was conceived in 1962. The foundation stone for current works was laid by Narendra Modi as the Chief Minister in 2012.
  1. The ferry service reportedly will save 15202 KL of fuel and reduce 48,000 MT tonnes of Co2 per year.
