Laying the foundation stones of an IIIT and AIIMS in poll bound Himachal Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the premier institutions will herald a new era for the hill state and also boost tourism.

Modi laid the foundation stone for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) premier hospital in Bilaspur and an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Una.

“We’re making a campus where over 3000 people will work together. This is also bringing employment opportunities. This AIIMS has not only come as lifeline for the people of Himachal but also a boost to the tourism sector here.” Modi said in his address.

“Opening of AIIMS in Himachal Pradesh especially in this region of the state has a lot of benefits for people. Tourists come here from far off places. If they get access to AIIMS and get treated well, they will want to come here frequently,” he added.

“IIIT is not just a college but it is the beginning of a new era,” he said further.

Apart from the IIIT and AIIMS, Modi inaugurated a steel processing plant of the Steel Authority of India set up with an outlay of Rs.70 crore in Kandrori town in Kangra district, via video conference from Bilaspur.

Officials said the 750-bed AIIMS would be set up with an outlay of Rs.1,350 crore with facility for a medical college with an intake capacity of 100 seats and a nursing college with 60 seats.

Bilaspur, located 130 km from the state capital, is the hometown of Nadda.
