31 October to be observed as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’

On the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel that falls on 31 October, the country will observe Rashtriya Ekta Diwas to foster and reinforce the government’s dedication to preserve and strengthen unity of the nation.

Incidentally, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also falls on the same day.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will offer floral tribute to Sardar Patel at Patel Chowk in New Delhi on the day, followed by a pledge and ‘Run for Unity’ flag-off.

The ‘run’ is being organised by Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the participants will cover 1.5 km from National Stadium up to Shah Jahan Road.

Badminton player PV Sindhu, Indian cricketer Mithali Raj and Hockey player Sardar Singh are likely to participate in the ‘run’.

Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Department of Sports, Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Delhi Police and other agencies will be involved in organising the programme.

All states and UTs will organise functions at respective capitals and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is coordinating with the local administration to conduct functions in 623 districts, while the Ministry of Human Resource Development is organising functions in the Kendriya and Navodaya Vidyalayas.

A march-past will be carried out by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Delhi Police in their respective grounds. Functions to commemorate the National Unity Day will also be held in all Indian Embassies and missions abroad.
