In an early morning encounter on Tuesday, a joint team of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force and the Meerut police gunned down two criminals in Kankerkhera area.
The slain criminals were accused in the recent murder of a newly married woman during a robbery near Mataur village on the National Highway 58. The woman, Mahavish, was shot dead on April 27 after being robbed of cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees when she along with her husband was on their way to Muzzaffarnagar after their wedding in Ghaziabad.
The two criminals have been identified as Narsi alias Tiger of Modinagar and Dheeraj of Shatabdi Nagar locality in Meerut. The police have recovered a carbine, a pistol, a country- made pistol, live cartridges and two magazines from their possession.
Superintendent of Police, STF, Alok Priyadarshi said they got a tip-off about the movement of criminals in the area after which the joint team of STF and police traced and surrounded them in Kankerkhera area in the early hours of Tuesday.
Finding themselves trapped, the criminals opened fired at the police who fired back causing bullet injuries to the two, killing them on the spot.
The SP and Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey were present when the encounter took place.
According to Priyadarshi, the deceased criminals were in their 20s and had a cash reward of Rs 25 thousand each on their heads. The two were members of a gang that used to rob people. On April 27, they robbed valuables and the car of newlywed couple Mahavish and Shahjeb near Daurala on the National Highway 58, and shot dead the bride when she put up resistance.
