Almost all non-vegetarian Hindus generally abstain from meat on certain days of the week and festivals. Hard-core nonvegetarians, while maintaining this dietary restriction, generally curse their luck if any party, feast or get-together comes their way on these days.
During the just-ended Navratra festival, that precedes Ramnavami, the devout not only keep away from non-vegetarian food but maintain a strict diet ~ non-cereal, without onion and garlic. For foodies craving for flesh, the nine days are no less than a punishment.
They not only get vegetarian food at home, even several restaurants during these days offer only vegetarian food or "Pooja Thali". Thus it was that a colleague's brother chose to visit a famous parantha seller in Ashok Vihar.
Upon reaching there he came to know the eatery was not adding onions and garlic in their paranthas. Therefore, he had no choice but to eat parantha without onions. However, he noticed on another table a group of students having paranthas with onions. Our enraged friend called out to the waiter to register his protest.
At this the waiter informed him that the students had brought onions with them and had ordered plain parantha like everyone else. Not convinced by the waiter's response, our colleague's brother looked around and indeed found no one eating onions. He then asked the students about the onions on their plates and they replied that they brought it from home as they could not not eat parantha without onions.
