Gangs of Wasseypur centred on the coal mafia of Dhanbad and the power struggles, politics and vengeance that chronicled the story of three generations of crime dons.
Gangs of Wasseypur is the only Indian film to feature in Guardian’s list of 100 best films of the 21st-century list. Anurag Kashyap’s two-part crime-drama appears on number 59.
Kashyap shared the news on his official Instagram handle with a heartfelt note that also said many films on the list positioned below Gangs of Wasseypur deserved to be way above the cult favourite.

“Guardian’s list of 100 best film of 21st century . Proud to be here but this wouldn’t be my list.So many films which are my favourites can’t be below my film.. and “the Dark Knight” deserves to be way up. The number 1 film in the list I totally agree with. That’s my absolute favourite of the 21st century. Here is the list…,” he wrote.

Anurag also shared a screenshot from the list where the mention of Wasseypur is made.
The British daily newspaper wrote, “Mammoth two-part Indian crime film that’s a long, long way from Bollywood. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this is conceived on a giant scale, as generations of three gangster families fight for supremacy over the course of half a century.”
Calling the film stylish and visceral, it said, “… it’s got a valid claim to be India’s answer to The Godfather.”
Kashyap also wrote that Wasseypur destroyed his filmmaking career with the expectations it set for him.
“…that film of mine that totally destroyed my filmmaking life by the expectations it sets from me as a filmmaker and has been continuously so , and I have forever been trying to break away from it. Hopefully someday that will happen,” he signed off.
Gangs of Wasseypur centred on the coal mafia of Dhanbad and the power struggles, politics and vengeance that chronicled the story of three generations of crime dons.
Both parts of the film were originally shot as a single film measuring a total of 319 minutes and was screened at the 2012 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
