Refusing to stay the release of a biopic on PM Narendra Modi, the Supreme Court on Monday said it cannot pass an order at this stage as the Censor Board was yet to certify the film.
The apex court said it will hear the matter on Tuesday and would pass an order if the petitioner brings on record that what the film depicts is highly objectionable.
The biopic is scheduled to be released on April 11.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said, “Why should we direct that individual be given a copy of the film.
We fail to understand why such a direction be given.”
The bench also said that as of now there is no cause of action for challenging the release of the film.
The film, fronted by Vivek Oberoi and directed by Mary Kom maker Omung Kumar, has courted controversy with various political parties saying that releasing it less than a week before the general elections begin is a violation of the model code of conduct.
