In a big win for India, musicians Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band ‘Shakti’ has bagged the Grammy Award for their latest release ‘This Moment’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated the winners for their exceptional talent and dedication to music.

“Congratulations Zakir Hussain, Rakesh Chaurasia, Shankar Mahadevan, Selvaganesh V and Ganesh Rajagopalan on your phenomenal success at the Grammys! Your exceptional talent and dedication to music have won hearts worldwide. India is proud! These achievements are a testament to the hardwork you keep putting in. It will also inspire the new generation of artists to dream big and excel in music,” he said on ‘X’.

The winning album features eight songs created by John McLaughlin (guitar, guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist).

The Indian band was nominated along with artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy and Davido at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards 2024 held in Los Angeles on Sunday.

Taking to X, Grammys wrote, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner – ‘This Moment’ Shakti. #GRAMMYs.”

Mahadevan, who took the stage alongside Rajagopalan and Selvaganesh, gave a shout-out to McLaughlin and Hussain. While McLaughlin gave the ceremony a miss, Hussain was backstage as he won another Grammy.

“We miss you John ji. Zakir Hussain, he just had another Grammy today. Thank you boys, God, family, friends and India. We are proud of you, India,” Mahadevan said, dedicating the win to his wife Sangeeta.

Rajagopalan thanked the Recording Academy for the recognition.

Hussain secured the Best Global Music Performance Grammy for his contribution to “Pashto” alongside Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer, featuring Rakesh Chaurasia.

Rakesh Chaurasia, a virtuoso flute player, celebrated his achievement with a total of two Grammy victories, making him the third Indian to win big on the day.

Indian musician Ricky Kej lauded the remarkable achievements of musical talents from India at the Grammys, hailing it as “India’s year at the Grammys”.

“Wow. This is truly India’s year at the Grammys! Wow. Rakesh Chaurasia, Shankar Mahadevan, Ganesh Rajagopalan, Selvaganesh Vinayakram and Ustad Zakir Hussain. India is truly shining! Thrilled,” Kej, a three-time Grammy winner, said in a social media post.
