Kerala Launches CSpace: India’s first government-owned OTT platform

Kerala introduces CSpace, its own OTT

Kerala is stepping into the digital entertainment arena with the launch of CSpace, India’s first government-backed OTT platform, scheduled for March 7th. Spearheaded by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the launch event will take place at Kairali Theatre at 9:30 am, with Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian presiding over the ceremony.

CSpace is not just another streaming service; it’s a response to the evolving landscape of OTT platforms, aiming to strike a balance between informative and entertaining content. Shaji N Karun, renowned film director and Chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), emphasized the platform’s commitment to addressing content selection challenges in the industry.

Managed by KSFDC, CSpace operates under the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. What sets it apart is its transparent content selection process. A panel of 60 cultural experts, including notable figures like Benyamin and Santhosh Sivan, will curate submissions for artistic and cultural merit. Only content approved by the panel will be showcased.

CSpace offers a diverse range of content, including 42 films in its initial lineup, comprising feature films, documentaries, and short films. Notably, films with national or state awards or those featured in major festivals will be included. This curated approach ensures viewers access high-quality content.

Transparency extends to the platform’s revenue model. Operating on a pay-per-view basis, viewers can enjoy feature films for ₹75, with shorter content available at a lower price. Half of the revenue generated goes directly to content providers, addressing concerns of dwindling profits among exhibitors and distributors.

Come March 7th, viewers can download the CSpace app from the PlayStore and App Store, marking a new chapter in Kerala’s digital entertainment landscape. K V Abdul Malik, MD of KSFDC, expressed optimism that the platform will bridge the gap between traditional and digital distribution channels, benefiting all stakeholders in the industry.

With CSpace, Kerala aims to revolutionize the OTT sector, offering not just entertainment but a platform that celebrates cultural diversity and promotes artistic excellence. As the curtains rise on this innovative venture, all eyes are on Kerala as it sets the stage for a new era in digital entertainment.
