On March 10, young Bengali actor Moumita Saha committed suicide apparently due to depression. She was found dead in her Kolkata flat where she lived alone. The police acquired a suicide note from the crime scene, which hinted that the 23-year-old actress was suffering from depression.

The note reported said she took the extreme step due to failing in her career in the film industry. Moumita did not receive calls from her parents on Friday and also apologised to them for committing suicide.

Other than the suicide note, Moumita’s Facebook posts too suggest she could have been depressed. She last posted on January 18 —a photo with a cryptic caption in Bengali in which she spoke of not “looking back”. “Bolbe na pichu tan r fire choll,” the post read.

On her 22nd birthday on September 17, the actor posted a message on Facebook that suggested she was in a sad state of mind and struggling in her life. Moumita wrote: “aj 21 bochor kete gelo .bujtei parlam na jibon er 21 ta bochor katiye fellam …ei 21 bochor er modhe koto ki hoye geche ,koto ki palteo geche amr jibone …sokh ,swpno ,valo laga ,valobasa ,anondo ,dukho ,,,sb tai ese dariyeche majh pothe ,,ekhon o buje uthte parchi na amr mon er ktha sona uchit naki ,bastob ta mene neoa uchit ?aj theke ro ekta notun din suru holo jibon er pothe …eto din ja cheyechi sb tai peyechi ek kthay bola jete pare jite esechi.kintu jiteo jeno here gechi …ai jibon judhe .ai majh pothe dariye aj theke notun vabe notun kore suru korlam din ta dekha jak ai jibon judhe hari na jiti?????” Loosely translated, the post meant: “I have lived 21 years of my life and did not realise how much things have changed. My life has changed so much, I am in the middle of a path, in a dilemma whether I should listen to my heart or accept the truth. Starting off with a new life, I have got everything I want and always won in life. I still feel like I have failed, life is a battle. Today, I am beginning a new battle in life, let’s see if I win or lose this life’s battle.”

Rahul Banerjee, her co-actor in a Bengali serial, was however stunned to hear the news as he said he had no idea she was dealing with depression. He told a leading daily, “It is a shocking news to me. No matter what a life should not end like this. It’s very sad.”

Another co-actor Koyel Sanchari also expressed shock over the incident. “I can’t believe you would go away so far. RIP Moumita,” she posted on Facebook.
