‘Laapataa Ladies’ misses Oscar shortlist; Aamir Khan responds
India’s official entry for Oscars' International Film category, Kiran Rao’s ‘Laapataa Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) misses the shortlist. Aamir Khan productions responds.
He is known as one of the finest actors of Indian cinema who can connect with the class and the mass. Superstar Aamir Khan, who was in the capital for the promotions of his upcoming film Secret Superstar, feels if you want to nail a character you have to experiment with your looks.
Aamir feels characterisation is important for an actor to get into the head of the character.

“It’s important to experiment with your looks in order to get into the head of the character. I feel from that everything flows, be it your character, your mannerism and your body language. You start to connect with the hard work you put in your character and I try to justify my experiments at the utmost,” Aamir told The Statesman.

Mr Perfectionist who always tries something out of the box is sometimes afraid of the decisions he makes!
“Yes I do get afraid about my experiments. Stepping out of your image into something new always give me a little tension. When I did Dhoom 3 and PK and had to sign for Dangal, I was afraid to lose my chiseled body and turn into a fat old guy! But then again it is important to understand that experiments are necessary when you are willing to do something out of the box,” The Ghajini actor said.
The Dangal actor puts an end to everyone’s doubt about Secret Superstar being a children’s film.
“There is a difference between children’s film and a film which is targeted at the youth. Secret Superstar is a teenager’s film which promotes girl empowerment as I want the film to deliver the message that treat your daughters equally and give them a chance,
“Also there is a difference between Dangal and Secret Superstar, Dangal was about a father mentoring his daughter in her career and him being the protagonist whereas this film is about a girl, who is the main lead, with big dreams to fulfill,” Aamir added.
Aamir, who is also known for doing one film a year, believes as an actor you have to do a film on the basis of what the audience want to see.
“When I sign a film I think about how the audience will react to it? So when I read the script of the film I read it as a fan and relate to it as a fan,” Aamir explained the logic behind doing different kinds of films.
The actor, who believes in his gut feeling, has never done a film on the basis of what he will get in return.
“If I choose a film on the basis of the business it will do then I wouldn’t have done a film like Taare Zameen Par and maybe not even Secret Superstar, because these films are very different from the mainstream cinema. If I start making decisions on the basis of how much the film will make and how much it will provide me then trust me I would have never signed some 7-8 films like Dangal and PK,” Aamir said.
Directed by Advait Chandan, Secret Superstar marks the second outing of Zaira Wasim and Aamir Khan. The film will release worldwide on October 19.
