Guru Randhawa shares his plans on marriage

Guru Randhawa

Punjabi singer Guru Randhawa has been wooing fans ever since he attained stardom. One of the more recognised voices not only in Punjabi music industry, but also in Hindi film industry, Randhawa is now competing with some of the leading singers of Bollywood.

With films reinventing their style of producing music albums, directors are more inclined to use songs that are already a hit among the masses. One of the popular independent singers, who has a significant number of peppy songs to his credit, is Randhawa. After his first song Suit becoming a party anthem in Irrfan Khan starrer Hindi Medium, his second song Ban Meri Rani became a part of Vidya Balan starrer Tumhari Sulu. The singer’s career graph is clearly on the rise. In an exclusive interaction with TheStatesman.com, Randhawa opens up about family, career and marriage and revealed that he is in no hurry to get married.

Excerpts from the interview:

From a small village in Punjab to living in a lavish flat in Mumbai, how has your lifestyle changed?

My lifestyle is the same inside the house, but it has changed outside. Like you think of a certain way of living in a house in Mumbai and owning a car. So that has certainly changed, but I am the same when I am inside my house. People from villages don’t really change.

Was your family supportive of your foray into the industry?

Yes! They were always supportive of me becoming a singer. From day one they have been a great support and always wanted me to become a singer. I used to sing a lot during my childhood days, so they knew that one day I will become a singer.

What are your plans for marriage? Are you dating someone?

Yes! I am dating so many songs of mine which are going to release soon. As soon as one song of mine releases, I start dating the other one because I believe the more you love your song, the better are its chances of becoming a hit. My parents have never mounted pressure on me about marriage, though I have a lot of marriage invitations. (Laughs) I don’t want to get married as of now.

You have a huge female fan following, any crazy fan moment?

Recently,, a girl fasted for me on Karwa Chauth and someone disguised himself as Guru Randhawa to make her break the fast. I replied to a tweet of hers that she should be careful while keeping this sacred fast. First of all, one must not fast for anyone just like that and should not break it the way she did with a wrong person. Fans love my music as they are connected with it, so I give them the message to live carefully and to be aware of what is going on in their surroundings.

Diljit Dosanjh also rose to fame like you, from being a regional singer to a Bollywood singer and has now acted in Bollywood movies as well. What do you have to say about him?

Diljit is doing really well. There are a couple of Punjabi singers who are working in this industry and whenever there is a discussion about them at any place, people mention my name as well and vice versa. I was quite young since I have been listening to his songs. I was born in 1991 and Diljit’s songs started coming out from 2001. It is really good for me as we are both are working in the same place right now and belong to the same industry. He has made everyone feel proud of him and I want to do the same. I want to produce quality work and songs. I want to make movies too so that people appreciate me as well.

Any Punjabi or Bollywood movies in the pipeline?

Yes, I am doing a Punjabi film right now and the shoot for the same would start sometime in February 2017. We will soon release the first look of the film with the name and release date. Let’s see how it turns out to be.

You songs have become superhit. Which is your favourite song?

All my songs are my favourites, as I have written all from the heart and put in my soul while composing them. My songs have been loved by fans because they were well written and all songs are the same for me.

How did you feel when you first got an offer to sing for Irrfan Khan’s Hindi Medium?

It was a really nice experience as I got to work with Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar. These are all artists who stepped into the Bollywood industry from theatre, and it was a really nice experience for me. Now I’ve worked with Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu, so I think it has always been a good experience with all my songs. All songs have been super hit with the blessings of everyone. Everything turned out to be good for me too.

How different is it singing for Bollywood films than for your own albums?

It is the same. I keep my songs the same, I don’t usually change them. There was no pressure on me as it would have been on someone whose songs were not so popular. My song was a hit before coming into Bollywood, so there is no question of working under pressure. Bollywood is a nice platform but I love independent music, because of which I got an opportunity to be here. That is more respectful for me.
