It is nearly impossible to think that veteran star Madhuri Dixit once carried the burden of the unfavourable tag of being ‘jinxed.’ Today she commands the screen with her million-dollar smile, magnetic dance moves, powerful expressions, and compelling acting. However, the road to success wasn’t always smooth for her. Upon debut, her initial films failed at the box office, earning her the label of a ‘jinxed’ actress. It was only after the success of ‘Tezaab,’ ‘Ram Lakhan,’ and ‘Beta,’ that she was able to discard the ‘flop’ tag.

In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel, director Indra Kumar talked about how Madhuri’s journey to success wasn’t easy. The ‘Beta,’ and ‘Dil’ director revealed that colleagues mocked him for casting Madhuri.

He said, “At that time, Aamir only had one hit film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. While not even a single film starring Madhuri had worked. She was called ‘jinxed’. When I signed her for Dil with Aamir Khan, it was still fine. But when I signed her for Beta too, everyone said, ‘Paagal hogaya hai tu, iski koi film nahi chal rahi.’ (Are you mad, none of her films are working).”

Continuing, he said, “By that time, an interview had come out, saying, ‘Madhuri is a jinxed girl. Whichever film she is in, it turns out to be a flop.’ Still, I started working on both Dil and Beta in 1988 with Madhuri. I had confidence in her. There was something in my heart which said, ‘Yaar, isme baat hai, kuch hai isme.’ (She has something in her).”

Recounting, Indira said that while filming, ‘Tezaab’ released, followed by ‘Ram Lakhan.’ Both the titles smashed the box office and Madhuri Dixit was able to fade the tag. “After that, I was also lucky. I started the film in October and Tezaab released in December 1988. And in January 1989, Ram Lakhan released. Madhuri ka jo ‘bechaari flop’ wala impression tha distributors ka vo change hogaya. (Her ‘flop girl’ impression changed). My next schedule was directly after six months from October. When Madhuri came there, she was already a superstar. She was down to earth on her first day, after becoming a star, and she still is currently, there is no change.”

Following the inception of her success spree, there was no looking back for Madhuri Dixit. The ‘Dhak Dhak’ girl of Bollywood rose to rule the film industry.
