Kiran Rao discusses life post-divorce from Aamir Khan, emphasizing self-identity beyond marital labels in an exclusive interview.
Kiran Rao, the renowned filmmaker and former spouse of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, opened up about her ongoing struggle with being consistently labeled as “Aamir Khan’s wife,” despite their divorce several years ago. The couple, who tied the knot in 2005, officially went their separate ways in August 2021.
In a recent interview amidst the promotional whirlwind for her upcoming project, “Laapataa Ladies,” Kiran candidly addressed the persistent misidentification she encounters. She recounted instances where she finds herself correcting individuals who automatically associate her identity with that of her ex-husband.

“It’s a recurring scenario, even now, especially at places like the airport,” Kiran revealed. “People often approach me and say, ‘You are Aamir Khan’s wife, right?’ The connection is immediate, but often my name doesn’t even come into play. It’s as if my entire existence revolves solely around my past marriage to Aamir.”

Despite the repetitive nature of such encounters, Kiran maintains a grounded perspective, crediting her strong sense of self for not succumbing to the potential despair of being reduced to a mere footnote in someone else’s story.
“I’ve come to terms with it,” she admitted. “But make no mistake, it doesn’t define me. Throughout my life, I’ve nurtured my own passions, cultivated meaningful friendships, and pursued my own endeavors with fervor. These are the facets of my identity that truly matter.”
Moreover, Kiran emphasized the harmonious professional relationship she shares with Aamir, particularly in their collaborative efforts within Aamir Khan Productions for “Laapataa Ladies.” Despite the external perceptions of their dynamic, Kiran expressed gratitude for Aamir’s inclusive approach and acknowledgment of her creative contributions.
“Partnering with Aamir has been a seamless experience,” she remarked. “He values my input and respects me as a creative equal. It’s a refreshing contrast to the prevalent narrative of me solely as a ‘wife’ or ‘ex-wife.’ I find solace in knowing that my identity transcends these labels.”
In essence, Kiran Rao’s journey serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of self-determination in shaping one’s narrative amidst societal expectations.
