Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali recently opened up about the resilience of the Hindi film industry despite dire predictions. In a candid interview, he revealed that he had often encountered the phrase “Bollywood nahi chalega” (Bollywood won’t survive), yet he firmly believes in the enduring spirit of cinema.
Recalling his early days in the industry, Imtiaz shared how he heard the ominous declaration numerous times. “Jab main aaya tha industry mein logo ne kaha tha, ‘Ab khatam ho gaya theatre, ab nahi chalega’ (When I entered the industry, people had said, ‘Now theatre is over, it won’t work’),” he recounted. However, he remained undeterred by such pessimism, emphasizing that the film industry has weathered similar storms in the past.

Imtiaz Ali highlighted historical instances where the demise of cinema was predicted, such as with the advent of VCR and color television. Despite these technological advancements, cinema persisted. “Cinema bandh hua nahi, kyuki hum jaise dreamers hai jo dekhte bhi hai and banate bhi hai (Cinema didn’t shut down because dreamers like us both watch and create films),” he affirmed.
