Renowned Bengali actress, Sreela Majumdar, passed away at the age of 65 after a valiant battle with cancer that spanned three years. The news of her demise, which occurred at her residence in Kolkata, has left a void in the hearts of her admirers and the Bengali film fraternity.

Known for her impactful performances, Sreela Majumdar was a cherished collaborator for eminent filmmakers like Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal, and Prakash Jha. Her significant contributions to Indian cinema were marked by stellar roles in films that have become classics over the years. Shyam Benegal’s ‘Mandi’ (1983), Prakash Jha’s ‘Damul’ (1985), and Utpalendu Chakraborty’s ‘Chokh’ (1983) stand as testaments to her versatile acting prowess.

Expressing her condolences, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee acknowledged Sreela Majumdar’s impactful legacy. Banerjee remarked on the profound loss to the Bengal film industry, highlighting Sreela’s remarkable presence on screen. “It is a big loss for Bengal film industry, and we shall miss her stellar presence. My condolences to her family,” said Banerjee.

Sreela Majumdar’s cinematic journey comprised 43 films, each contributing to the tapestry of Indian cinema. Her last film, ‘Palan’ directed by Kaushik Ganguly, received widespread acclaim in the previous year. The film served as a sequel to ‘Ekdin Pratidin’ and added another gem to Majumdar’s illustrious filmography.

Beyond her on-screen brilliance, Sreela Majumdar was also recognized for her sensitive voice dubbing. She lent her voice to Aishwarya Rai in Rituparno Ghosh’s ‘Chokher Bali’ (2003).

Born to Ramchandra Majumdar and Nani Majumdar, Sreela Majumdar pursued her education at Bangabasi College, an esteemed institution affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Her cinematic journey commenced in 1980 with her debut in Mrinal Sen’s ‘Parasuram’.
