Tej Bahadur Yadav, former Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, on Monday, approached the Supreme Court to contest the rejection of his nomination from the Varanasi Lok Sabha Constituency.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan is appearing for Tej Bahadur, who was dismissed from service in April 2017 after he had uploaded a few videos on the social media in January 2017 on the “substandard food” being served to the jawans of the BSF.

The Election Commission (EC) had, on Wednesday, May 1 rejected Tej Bahadur’s nomination. He was fielded by the Samajwadi Party from Varanasi Lok Sabha Constituency opposite Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Following the rejection, Tej Bahadur had said that he will move the Supreme Court to challenge the rejection.

“My nomination has been rejected wrongly. I was asked to produce the evidence at 6.15 pm yesterday. We produced the evidence still my nomination was rejected. We will go to the Supreme Court,” he had told media on Wednesday.

“I had filed my first nomination as an independent candidate on April 24 and on SP party symbol on April 29. If there were any issues with the nominations, why wasn’t I informed earlier? Despite lack of time, our legal team is furnishing all details to the RO,” Tej Bahadur had said, adding, “I am being stopped from fighting elections as the ‘nakli chowkidar (fake watchman)’ of the country is afraid of the ‘asli (real) chowkidar’.”

Tej Bahadur had, in March, announced that he will take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Varanasi seat as an Independent candidate in the Lok Sabha elections.

However, Tej Bahadur was named the Samajwadi Party candidate from Varanasi constituency in April. The SP had fielded Tej Bahadur after dropping Shalini Yadav who had earlier filed her nomination from the seat.

Varanasi is going to the polls in the seventh and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 19. Results will be declared on May 23.
