“Prof. Akhtar briefed the Minister about the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research already functioning at JMI, which is dedicated for the study of issues related to the North-East with emphasis on various aspects of tribal communities in the region,” a senior official of the university said.
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar on Thursday met Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda to request for funds for setting up a North-East Central Research and Resource Centre for the Tribals at the JMI.
“Prof. Akhtar briefed the Minister about the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research already functioning at JMI, which is dedicated for the study of issues related to the North-East with emphasis on various aspects of tribal communities in the region,” a senior official of the university said.
“JMI will try to highlight the issues of tribals in the North-East through research and studies as they are more or less confronted with the same issues as that of minorities,” said the official.

JMI VC Akhtar had earlier called on the President of India, Ramnath Kovind, and the Prime Miniter, Narendra Modi, for their support towards the development of the university, including the setting up of a medical college-cum-hospital.
