The CPI(M) party congress on Thursday began hammering out the differences that arose in their central committee on the issue of having an electoral understanding with the Congress and a final decision would be taken on Friday based on which the political resolution would be worded.
“The discussions have begun. As the central committee decided, both the opinions, which caused the difference in opinion, were placed before the congress”, general secretary Mr Sitaram Yechury told a Press conference.
The draft political resolution, which won the central committee’s vote was tabled by his predecessor Mr Prakash Karat.
He said media has speculated wrongly that two different resolutions were circulated at the party congress. He also made light of the fact that the draft resolution was placed by a leader other than the general secretary by emphasising that there have been several incidents when the draft was tabled by other people.
On whether voting would be open or through a secret ballot, he said the practise is that there would be a show of hands when a delegate presses for one’s amendment.
“As there was a difference in opinion on the tactical line, the central committee decided that both the views should be taken up by the party congress. Once the congress decides it would be the party decision”, he said. He said that there is no difference of opinion on the need to defeat BJP.
