Wake-up call
The global democratic landscape in 2024 reveals an unsettling yet fascinating trend. Across continents, voters have upended incumbents, embraced polarising ideologies, and gravitated toward both Right and Left-wing populism.
Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) BVRC Purshottam on Saturday said that polling for five Lok Sabha seats will be held on April 19.
Uttarakhand voter strength has gone up by 6.7 per cent in the past five years. More than 5.5 lakh new voters have been added to the state’s electoral roll for the 2024 General Elections.

The CEO informed that of 83.21 lakh voters, 43.08 lakh are males while 40.12 are female. Electorate size for 2024 polls also includes 65.17 thousand 85 plus age group elders, 93.35 thousand service voters and 79.96 thousand physically challenged voters.
“For elders and physically challenged voters, we have made elaborate arrangents to bring them to the polling booths. Those willing to cast their votes at homes will be provided all support by the polling parties. However, they will have to register themselves with us for the support. As of now, we have 79.96 physically challenged voters on record,” said the CEO.
Uttarakhand is consistently witnessing rising poll percentage in the first three successive parliamentary polls after the state was formed in 2000.
However, in 2019 voting per cent slightly went down to 61.5 per cent from more than 62 per cent in 2014. In 2004, the
state registered around 49 per cent voting while it was almost 54 per cent in 2009.
The BJP had been winning all five constituencies for the past two Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019.
The party hopes to repeat its performance for the third time in a row as its state spokesperson said: “We have no doubt about our clean sweep this time again. We are working hard to take our victory margin further high this time.”
