Uttarakhand BJP is struggling to provide a clarification on the sexual harassment charges made by a woman against a top BJP office bearer.
With the campaigning for local body elections underway in the hill state, the saffron brigade is making desperate efforts to control the damage. On the other hand the Congress has become aggressive on the controversy and is making full efforts to push BJP into a tight corner.
Facing huge embarrassment due to the controversy, BJP quietly removed its Uttrakhand general secretary Sanjay Kumar from his post.
Uttarakhand BJP spokesperson Dr Devendra Bhasin said, “The issue has come into the notice of the party and we have started internal inquiry. We will disclose the facts of the inquiry to media soon.”
The scandal has badly affected the BJP election campaign. Even on Monday the media quizzed state BJP president Ajay Bhatt on the issue and he too repeated about an internal inquiry underway against Sanjay Kumar. Rather than the poll prospects, the BJP is busy providing clarification on the sex scandal.
Making a fresh attack on BJP, Uttarakhand Congress hosted a press conference in Dehradun on Monday. Suryakant Dhasmana, senior vice president of Uttarakhand Congress, said, “BJP Dehradun president Vinay Goyal has admitted that the issue came to their notice in September. And it is shocking that the party is conducting its internal inquiry since two months. If the BJP fails to take action against the accused in the next two days, Congress will launch an agitation against the BJP in Uttarakhand. It appears they busy in some cover up exercise.”
Meanwhile, party insiders claim that as state general secretary is a coveted post, making any comment and taking action falls under the jurisdiction of the national body.
