Four persons, including two children, died after fire broke out in a residential building at Shastri Nagar in the Shahdara area of East Delhi at 5.30 am on Thursday.
Police said that the victims included a couple and two of their nieces. The fire department said that several others sustained burn injuries in the incident.
Police suspect that a spark in an electric wire in the parking area of the building might have triggered the blaze. However, they added that the exact reason will be determined only after a proper investigation.
A total of 9 fire department vehicles were rushed to the spot to extinguish the flames in the four-storey building.
The injured persons were rushed to hospital where they are undergoing treatment.
In a separate incident on Wednesday, a fire erupted in an electronics store on Roshanara Road in North Delhi. However, no casualties were reported.
The outlet dealt in items like air conditioners, coolers, and geysers.
A police team, including the SHO of the Subzi Mandi Police Station, immediately rushed to the spot and evacuated residents from the neighbouring buildings as a precautionary measure.
“Prima facie, the cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit. Appropriate legal action will be taken,” the police said.
