Youth can make parliamentarians discharge their duties: VP Dhankhar
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar said here on Sunday that the youngsters can make parliamentarians and public representatives discharge their constitutional duties.
Commissioner of Police Sandeep Khirwar has been credited with improving the traffic situation in Gurugram. Traffic police challaned and fined over 2 lakh vehicle owners for violating various traffic rules from January to June.
The special drive against traffic offenders started a day after Khirwar assumed charge of his new posting on 17 August 2016. The impact of impounding more than 2000 auto-rickshaws last month was so great that thousands of vehicles with incomplete documents stopped plying.

Commissioner Khirwar said the drive was aimed at inculcating a sense of discipline among drivers to ensure better traffic understanding, management and safety of road users. With its eastern part neighbouring Delhi, cracking down on drink driving is a routine for Gurugram Traffic Police. Gurugram roads, on an average, have at least 20 checkposts, especially at vulnerable spots.

A traffic police officer said drink driving checks are conducted daily from 8 p.m. to midnight. “Drinking and driving checking system is followed through the year, the number of checkposts doubles during festivities. This kind of vigilance is required because a lot of people are found drinking in their cars and then driving,” said Khirwar.
Inderjeet Ahlawat, a resident of Gurugram, said the steps taken by police have brought some relief to residents as MG Road was virtually off limits for families in the evenings because it was routine to see drunks driving rashly. Ahlawat said now he feels it is safe to go out with the family during weekends.
Vikram Verma, working in real estate, said the police should conduct stringent drives on weekends at peak points like MG Road, Sohna Chowk, Shubash Chowk, Sector-14 and other places. “Drinking and driving is a major issue in Gurgaon,” he said.
Several resident welfare associations (RWAs), industry bodies, NGOs and social activists have appreciated the traffic police initiatives. "The check points organised by police especially during late evening may not suit a section of people but it is in favour of wider public interest," an activist told The Statesman.
