Central trade unions on Thursday began their three-day dharna here to announce intensification of their “struggle against the anti-national and anti-worker” policies of the government, and a countrywide general strike, if the unions’ demands are not accepted.

Workers from all over the country representing several public and private sector units, permanent employees, contract and casual workers, and employees of state and Central governments, banks,
insurance, telecom, railways, defence joined the dharna.

Several veteran trade union leaders including Gurudas Dasgupta of AITUC, Tapan Sen of CITU, Ashok Singh of INTUC, and Harbhajan Singh Sidhu of Hind Mazdoor Sabha addressed the workers’ gathering.

Leaders of the two major national federations of railway employees -Gopal Mishra, general secretary of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, and Raghavaiagh, general secretary of National Federation of Indian Railwaymen, announced that they would join the indefinite strike, whenever the joint trade union platform gave a call for it.

Others who addressed the dharna included Satyawan (AIUTUC), G Devarajan (TUCC), Manali (SEWA), Rajiv Dimri (AICCTU), M Shanmugam (LPF) and Ashok Ghosh (UTUC).

Leaders of several other industrial federations including Venkatachalam, general secretary of All India Bank Employees’ Association, and Subhash Lamba, additional general secretary of All
India State Government Employees’ Association joined in endorsing the call for the indefinite strike.
