A controversy have erupted over covering the statue of former Prime Minister Ch Charan Singh with saffron clothes in Baraut town of Bagpat district on Saturday, while a BJP event was going on which was attended by Union minister Satyapal Singh.

The statue was installed by the irrigation department in 2006 when Anuradha Chaudhary was the state irrigation minister. But it was unveiled on Saturday by Union minister Satyapal Singh, who is also the area MP.

Targeting the BJP over the issue, RLD’s state spokesperson, Sunil Rohta, called it a “cheap politics” and said that Ch Charan Singh was always against saffronisation of politics.

Recalling a past incident, Rohta said that in Haridwar the BJP opposed naming of a ghat after Ch Charan Singh and now they are saffronising him.

He said during the rule of Samajwadi party, the RLD wrote to the district magistrate many times seeking approval for the statue’s inauguration by party chief Ajit Singh but it went unheeded.

It is good that the statue was at last unveiled after 12 years of its installation, he said, adding, but wrapping it with saffron clothes is totally unacceptable.

Reacting on RLD’s protest, BJP president of western UP, Ashwani Tyagi, said the saffron colour is a symbol of Indian culture and those who objects to the act seems to have no faith on their culture and tradition.
