The BJP’s Sikkim unit president has accused Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and his Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) of having a hand in the attack on BJP workers at the party’s zonal office at Singtam in Sikkim yesterday afternoon.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, DB Chauhan also condemned the attack on his party workers and the “forced resignation” of LB Chauhan, the South district in-charge of the party. “The incident is saddening and we condemn it. The attack was planned and the mob was being sent by a big force or power, which I feel is the CM himself.

The SDF party is involved in this incident as they have been protesting against our party everywhere possible in the state,” Mr Chauhan said. “We have filed an FIR against the attackers and we feel that the administration will take action against them as soon as possible,” he added.

He further said that the BJP is a peace-loving party and has been working as a responsible opposition in the state, and that such incident was “highly intolerable.” He also said that the party will sit, discuss and take action against the attackers. A group of persons attacked the zonal office of the BJP in Singtam and also made LB Chauhan resign from his post.

The FIR was lodged soon after the incident and the Singtam police arrested six individuals, who were allegedly BJP supporters. While observers said factionalism in the BJP was clearly visible, as the attackers were known to be BJP supporters, Mr Chauhan refused to speak on the factionalism matter.
