As a mark of reverence, a hydropower company has decided to perform ‘pooja’ of river Satluj in Kinnaur district.
The initiative to perform the ‘pooja’ of the Satluj is being taken up by the Satluj Jal Vidhyut Nigam (SJVN) Ltd. The ceremony will be held on 21 May at Nathpa in Kinnaur, where project’s reservoir is located.

The idea is the brainchild of SJVN Ltd Chairman-cum-Managing Director Nand Lal Sharma, who took over the reins of the company a few months back. He said that the idea had stemmed from the worship of river Ganga on the ghats of Varanasi and Haridwar.
“Keeping in mind the need to pay reverence to the river Satluj, we have decided to hold a ‘pooja’ on 21 May on the banks of river Satluj at its Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Station of 1500 MW capacity. The ‘pooja’ has been scheduled ahead of the raising day of SJVN that is celebrated on 24 May,” ,” he said.
The objective of holding the pooja is to spread the awareness regarding the upkeep of the river that is not only pious to the state but also provides livelihood to the people, he added.
The event will be made an annual feature and from next year, the locals will also be involved, said Nand Lal Sharma.
The Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Station which is the country’s largest hydropower plant was commissioned in May 2004, when it was officially dedicated to the nation by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 28 May 2005.
SJVN Ltd operates Nathpa Jakhri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) and Rampur HPS (412 MW), and surveys are on for many other proposed projects in different districts. Other than HP, it also has footprints in hydroelectric projects in other states that include Uttarakhand, besides in neighbouring countries of Nepal and Bhutan.
