Karnataka HC Denies Maintenance to Wife in Adultery
Earlier, a magistrate had granted her protection and awarded maintenance of ₹1,500, along with ₹1,000 for rent and ₹5,000 as compensation.
As punishment for adultery, a group of local people in Raipur village near Raiganj in North Dinajpur district this morning tonsured the heads of a man and a woman, smeared soot on their faces, and paraded them in the village. They also tied the two with ropes and hung garlands of shoes on their necks.
The police later raided the village and rescued the duo from the villagers’ clutches, it is learnt. “Some locals early this morning found a married man, Ananda Barman, a Toto driver by profession, in a compromising position with Papi Chakraborty in her bedroom in Raipur village. Following this, locals caught hold of the duo and beat them up black and blue. They were bound onto a tree in the village for hours, while at dusk, their heads were tonsured and their face smeared with soot. They were then tied with a rope and paraded in the village,” local sources said.
They added that the woman is also married and that she recently gave birth to a child, but was rejected by her husband. Since then, she has been living with her parents in their house in Raipur.

The villagers alleged that the woman, for the past few years, had been having illicit relationships with many men in the village. They also claimed that they repeatedly warned the woman for her behavior, “which she chose to ignore.”
Inspector-in-charge of the Raiganj police station, Sumanta Biswas, said they rescued the man and the woman. “The duo has been detained and we have started investigations into the matter,” he said.
