Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh is set to become a vehicle free zone from 1 June.
Addressing a press conference, the PU registrar, GS Chadha said that the restriction of entry of vehicles without PU official stickers in the academic area of Sector-14 campus along with installation of wicket gates will come into force from 1 June.
However, vehicles of faculty members and non teaching staff with official stickers will be allowed, Chadha said adding the move will be also to encourage the young faculty members to cycle to their departments.

Designated parking slots have been made near gate no one and two for parking of sufficient vehicles of the visitors and the students of the academic session 2018-19, he said.
Free shuttle bus service and e-rickshaw facility will be available from these parking slots on nominal charges.
According to the vehicle free policy, blowing of horns, parking in no vehicle zone, use of vehicles without silencers will be considered as an offence.
There is also a provision for towing away vehicles from the unauthorised parking. For the convenience of the visitors and the students, frequency of five shuttle bus service will be further enhanced, Chadha said.
It was further informed that there is also a proposal to provide Cycle Dock Stations in the near future in PU Campus as a means of public transport.
The chief of university security (CUS), PU, Prof Ashwani Koul informed that 55 cameras on and around gates will be installed.
Taxis and auto rickshaws will not be allowed inside academic areas. Pick and drop points for taxis will be demarcated for PU residents and hostellers.
He further informed that because of lack of man power, the security personnel from various departments will be pooled in on rotation basis for manning the wicket gates.
