Three of Nagara Munda family in Mulapal Mundasahi village complained of acute stomach pain, coupled with continuous vomiting and loose motion on Thursday. They were rushed to the Area hospital in Jajpur Road for treatment.
Anita Munda died during treatment at the hospital. Then, six members of two other families were affected by the water borne disease and were rushed to the district head quarters hospital on Thursday night.
A fresh batch of 12 villagers was taken to different hospital for treatment on Friday. Health officials said the main reason for the outbreak of diarrhoea was the contamination of the village well, which is the only source of drinking water there.
“The diarrhea affected people have been admitted to district head quarters hospital in Jajpur town, Area hospital at Jajpur Road and community health centre at Korei and almost all of them have been treated and cured,” confirmed Kanhu Charan Nayak, Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO), Public Health of Jajpur.
“Filthy water from a nearby nullah reportedly entered the village well through a crack in its wall. The tribal people consume water from the well as it is the lone source of drinking water,” he said.
The ADMO said water purification efforts have begun in the affected village. “All the water sources have been disinfected while halogen and ORS packets have been distributed,” he said.
