One of the accused, Ashish Chauhan in the ‘Gudia’gang rape and murder case was granted bail on Saturday by the Court, in absence of concrete evidence against him.

Ashish Chauhan was in judicial custody and had filed the bail plea in the Court on 28 August, which was however, then not entertained by the Court.

Ashish Chauhan along with five other accused Rajinder Singh alias Raju, Subhash Singh Bisht, Lakjan alias Chotu, Suraj and Deepak were arrested by the police on 13 July for the murder and gangrape of 16-year-old in Kotkhai area of Shimla district.

However, one of the accused Suraj was allegedly killed in police custody on 19 July by a co-accused Rajender.

Gudia had gone missing on July 4, while she was returning home from school and her body was found two days later in the forest.

Amid public outrage alleging shoddy investigations by the Special Investigation Team, the case was referred to Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) by the High Court on the request by the state government.

Other than arrests of 8 police personnel in the alleged custodial death of one of the accused, the CBI has, however, failed to make headway in the gangrape and murder of ‘Gudia’ case so far.
