A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from Australia died in a paragliding mishap after he crash-landed in Bir Billing under Bainath sub-division of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, around 230 km from here.

Sanjay Kumar Ramdas Devarkonda had taken off from Bir Billing but he crashed in Dhauladhar mountain range owing to strong winds.

Originally hailing from Pune in Maharashtra, Devarkonda was settled in Australia.

This is the second such incident in Bir Billing as earlier a Singaporean paraglider Kok Choonk Na had died after his paraglider crashed in the area.

So far, around 10 paragliders have met with such accidents and they have been rescued by the district administration, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Baijnath Vikas Shukla said.

Shukla said a Spanish paraglider Jos Lewis, who was stuck between Thamsar Pass and Bara Bhangal, has been rescued and admitted in a hospital for further treatment.

A meeting with all the paragliders was scheduled on Thursday and they were informed about the precautions while taking off from Bir Billing.

“The late monsoon is causing disturbance in air and the paragliders are getting struck by strong winds this time,” he said, adding the paragliders have been asked to avoid such areas.
