The North Bengal University (NBU) has proposed honorary DLit and DSc for eminent personalities and the chief guest during the 48th convocation of the university. The list has been sent to the chancellor, governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, for his consent. Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee’s name has been proposed as the chief guest.
Among the proposed intellectual stalwarts for the DLit degree are singing legend Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, reputed historian, author and Harvard professor Sugata Bose, and historian Ramchandra Guha, while astrophysicist Jayant Vishnu Narlikar and cardiologist and philanthropist Dr Devi Shetty have been proposed for the DSc honour. “The NBU court, the highest decision-making body, has proposed the convocation to be held on 10 February. The proposed date, lists of the chief guests and noted personalities for the DLit and DSc degrees have been sent to the chancellor for his approval.

He may disapprove of the list, and add other names and then decide on the date pf the convocation. We will wait for his approval,” said officials at the office of the officiating registrar of the university. University sources said that one person each is conferred on the DLitt and the DSc usually.
“The university will contact them in order of preference after getting a nod from the chancellor, though it is subject to consent from the personalities concerned,” the sources said. Meanwhile, a search committee has been formed to appoint the next vice-chancellor of NBU, as the tenure of the present V-C, Prof Somnath Ghosh, is set to complete in February this year.
Prof Ghosh joined as the V-C of the university on 10 February, 2014. The three members of the committee are Basab Chaudhury, V-C of West Bengal State University, also known as Barasat University, V-C of Netaji Subhas Open University Subha Sankar Sarkar and Anil Bhuimali, the V-C of Raiganj University. As per rules, the members in the search committee have been nominated by the chancellor and governor Keshari Nath Tripathi.
