The Meerut police on Tuesday suspended three police officials after a video showing them abusing and slapping a female medical student inside a Dial 100 car went viral. They were seen beating the girl over an alleged affair with a Muslim man.
The incident took place two days ago in the Medical area of Meerut after the girl and her Muslim male friend were apprehended by members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. They accused the man of ‘love jihad’ and handed over the couple to the police.

According to reports, one of the cops in the video allegedly made derogatory remarks on the girl. As the girl tries to speak, a female constable is seen slapping her.
The video was shared by a journalist on Twitter following which the UP Police directed the Meerut police to take appropriate action.
The Meerut Police subsequently suspended the cops and also sent a report against a Home Guard, who was with the cops at the time of the incident, to the concerned department.
Meerut SP, City, Ranvijay Singh said, “The incident is connected to the Medical police station. Around 2-3 days ago some people brought a boy and a girl to the police station. Both were handed over to their families.”
“Now, a video has surfaced in which a female constable is hitting the girl. Other cops sitting in the vehicle are using objectionable language. A probe has been ordered and those who found guilty will be punished,” he added.
The UP Police later tweeted the names of the suspended officials stating that the “behaviour shall never be tolerated”.
When asked what action will be taken now that the victim’s identity has become public, the SP said that the video will be investigated and whatever additional provisions it attracts will be included in the police action.
“With reference to a video by staff of PRV 561 in PS Medical Meerut, HC Salek Chand, Const Neetu Singh, lady Const Priyanka have been suspended. A report regarding the HG Sainserpal has been sent to District Commandant Home Guard. Such behaviour shall never be tolerated,” read a tweet.
Reports say that the police are also trying to find out the identity of the VHP members who apprehended the couple. They had reportedly asked the girl’s father to file a case against the boy but he denied calling the entire scenario a misunderstanding.
But eminent people demanded more action from the UP police and the state government.
Actor Kabir Bedi took to Twitter asking Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to punish the cops.
“Yogi Adityanath ji, UP Police suspended these policemen. Not enough, sir Arrest, imprison, punish. Pls enforce PM @narendramodi policies: ‘Those who take the law in their hands or take to violence will not be spared, whoever they are’,” he wrote.
CPI(ML) secretary Kavita Krishnan wrote, “Suspension isn’t enough – when will cops concerned be booked for the crimes against this woman? When will they be sacked? This single incident happened to become public – when will we have an independent statewide enquiry into the communal, casteist rot in @Uppolice?”
“This is shocking! Yogi’s Police goons taunt & beat up a young girl in a police van merely because she was friendly with a Muslim boy! This is utter goonda Raj of the police in UP in the name of ‘Love jihad’! These policemen must be dismissed. Must be taken up in the Supreme Court,” wrote Prashant Bhushan.
