A man in Malda district was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths for protesting their attempts to have his granddaughter accept their proposal for a love affair.
Siddique Sheikh, 65, a resident of Nasiruddintola village in Alinagar gram panchayat under the Kaliachak police station, died when the youths led by a local, Mujahid Sheikh, beat him up, it is learnt.
A police complaint has been filed against eight accused and five of them have been so far, police said. According to a relative of the deceased, Sajjad Ali, the girl had refused proposals for a love affair made by one of the accused boys.
“But he kept on trying and wanted the girl to accept his proposal,” Mr Ali said. “The grandfather of the girl, meanwhile, protested the entire thing and asked the family members of the boy to keep him under control,” he added.
“This enraged the boys and they tried to kidnap the girl last evening. Later, Mujahid and his gang attacked the house of the girl and thrashed the grandfather,” Mr Ali said.
Sheikh died of injuries in the hospital. The former zilla parishad Karmadhakhsya of the area, Mijanur Rahaman, said he wants justice for the old man. Superintendent of police Arnab Ghosh was unavailable for his comments.
