Bhojpuri folk singer claims she was stopped from singing ‘Raghupati Raghav’ at a BJP event
Bhojpuri singer Devi faced backlash and threats after objections to her bhajan at a Bihar event honoring Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birth centenary.
Protesting the system of preparing electricity bills on the basis of meter readings of three months, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today held a demonstration in front of the office of the divisional engineer, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) at Rabindra Avenue under the English Bazaar police station.
Party activists demanded that the bills be prepared on the basis of the reading of one only month. District BJP leaders also served a memorandum to the divisional engineer on the matter, and claimed that they would go for a bigger movement if the issue is not settled within a month.

“As compared to the other states of the country, people of West Bengal pay huge tariff for every unit of electricity due to the extra burden laid on them by hooking, faulty meters and ignorance of the distribution company. In Malda, there are three such blocks where only 28% of the supplied electricity is being paid and the rest is stolen and we, the common, people have to bear the extra charges.
If the matter is not being looked into within a month from today, we are going for a bigger movement,” Mr Chakrabarty said.
He added that a post, which is now viral on socialmedia about the matter, was circulated by them to build public opinion.
Among the other demands of the party, installation of new meters, recruitment of workers and end to faulty bill generation top the list. The DE of Malda Division, Mohammad Nasiruddin, said, “The memorandum given to me will be sent to the higher authorities.”
