Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday inaugurated city’s first Engineered Sanitary Landfill Site (ESLFS) which will greatly help in scientific disposal of garbage generated in the city.

The LG said that the construction of the plant began on September 30, 2021, under the Central government’s Swachh Bharat Mission 1.0.

The total cost of construction incurred on the ESLFS facility is about Rs 42.31 crore, Saxena said, adding that commissioning of this state-of-the-art plant will greatly help in scientific disposal of garbage generated in the city.

Kejriwal said that the modern plant inaugurated in Tehkhand Okhla will have arrangements to process the ash generated after disposal of garbage, for which 15 acres of land has been developed.

Calling it a significant step towards sustainable waste management and environmental conservation, he added that efforts were continuously being made to make Delhi clean and pollution free.

The ESLFS, is unlike the usual landfills or garbage dump sites, and is designed in a proper way to make sure that the waste or the garbage is disposed of in a scientific manner, which is better for the environment as compared to the conventional dumpsites.

Notably, this site is said to be next to the Tehkhand waste to energy plant, and the ashes which are the outcome of the Tehkhand plant will be sent here directly.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi was also present during the inauguration ceremony.
