Workers launch signature campaign demanding fair bonus in tea gardens
In a significant move to advocate for their rights, tea garden workers have initiated a signature campaign across various gardens today.
Kolkata high court judge Nadira Patherya is likely attend a camp at the closed Madhu tea garden under the Kalchini block in Alipurduar district on 24 February, Alipurduar Sub-divisional legal services committee sources said.
According to the sources, Ms Patherya will be accompanied by the Jalpaiguri district judge and Alipurduar Additional district judge in the camp to be organised to discuss 25 issues related to the life of workers associated with the closed tea garden.
“Till now, we have confirmations that Ms Patherya, along with the Jalpaiguri district Judge and Alipurduar Additional district judge, will be addressing the camp. The team will be dealing with the 25 issues related to workers of the tea plantation,” the secretary of the Alipurduar Subdivisional Legal Services Committee, Bigyan Bose, said.

“We have conducted a fourday survery to chalk out the burning issues of the workers of the tea plantation and have recorded their greviances with names of the workers. Following the camp, necessary steps to resolve the listed disputes will be taken on the spot,” added Mr Bose.
The president of the Dooars Cha Bagan Workers’ Union, Gopal Pradhan said, “We will be present there in the camp. The camp in the presence of the justice of Kolkata High Court will surely find ways to resolve the crisis of the distressed tea workers in the closed tea garden.”
It is learnt that the management of the tea garden declared suspension of work on 24 September 2014, which left 961 workers of the tea plantation to lead a life illed with misery.
