The Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) is taking several measures to further strengthen the trade network with Nepal, Vinit Kumar, KoPT chairman on Wednesday said.

Addressing a Press conference, Vinit Kumar said, “The Nepal trade is an important segment for us not only from a commercial point of view but also from a strategic angle. Recently, our team of traffic managers and director, marine, visited Nepal to interact with the trade importers and exporters.”

“The Nepal exporter and importers had previously complained of lack of transparency of rates charged. To address this issue, we have put up a ‘Nepal Corner’ on our website. Any complaints or queries can be sent here for immediate response. In addition to that, we have also appointed an officer whose contact and other necessary details have been uploaded on the website. The concerned officer could be contacted in case of any grievances on their side. The issue will be resolved by the officer-in-charge.”

The chairman added that the KoPT is trying to bring transparency in the rates that are being charged to the importers and exporters in Nepal. “We have asked all the major lines to disclose their rates on their websites to bring transparency in the issue” said Mr Kumar.

Mr Kumar further said, “Adding to these initiatives, we are also taking another initiative in collaboration with the Nepal consulate and a trade and warehousing company from Nepal. The company has taken some lands from us on lease and very shortly we will set up a Container Freight Station (CFS) facility to store containers for a longer period of time.”

Meanwhile, the chairman added that the Tajpur port is going through the first phase of development works. A report is being prepared following which a detailed project report will be placed. For Haldia dock, a study of land resources has been carried out and we have received a draft report. A final report will be prepared, said the chairman.
