A senior district BJP leader was arrested on Tuesday and produced in the Serampore court over a complaint lodged against him by his wife, bringing charges of domestic violence. Accused Hari Nath Mishra has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Accusing her husband of of inflicting brutal physical and mental torture on her, complainant Puja Upadhyay said, “I got married to Hari Nath Mishra on 10 February 2015. After six months of our marriage, my husband and my in-laws started demanding more money from my father. Whenever their demands were not met, my husband and my in-laws inflicted physical and mental torture on me.”

Puja lives in Subhash Nagar housing complex in Serampore. She said the efforts made by her to save the marriage failed.  “My parents approached my husband and in-laws a number of times, praying for an amicable solution but all in vain. Puja said she went to the police and lodged a complaint of domestic violence after her husband and in-laws beat her up again on Monday.

“On Monday night, I was brutally thrashed and given life threats. Left with no other option, I lodged a complaint against my husband, in-laws and brother-in-law on Monday night. Serampore police arrested my husband Hari Nath Mishra. Hari should be punished severely. He is the district BJP Yuva Morcha secretary but he misused his political power to carry on inhuman brutality on me and my parents, demanding huge sums of money now and then.”

Mishra has been charged with Sections 498 A, 307 and 368B. The Serampore court sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.

District BJP president Suman Ghosh said the party had nothing to do with anyone’s personal matter. “Mr Hari Nath Mishra will have to face the consequences for his misdeeds as stated by his wife. The law will take its own course,” he said.
