The body of a minor girl of Mahendratola village under the Bhutni police station, who was allegedly killed by her parents “to save the family honour” on Friday night, could not be recovered from the river, though divers have been pressed into action to fish out the same.

Though the accused parents have claimed that they have not killed their daughter and that she rather committed suicide, sources claimed they wanted to hush up the matter by dumping the body in the water, while the police carry out their investigations and continue with the search operation. Meanwhile, police officers said the accused duo is being interrogated. Notably, the couple had been spotted by some villagers on Friday night carrying “something” heavy in a sack to the ghats and that they threw it into the Ganga river from a boat.

The police were tipped off and the couple was arrested and a suo moto case started. It is alleged that their daughter, a 16-year-old class nine student of Paschim Narayanpur High School, had been in a love affair with a close relative of hers in the same village, which her parents strongly opposed. “But the relationship continued and as a final outcome, the girl was strangled to death by her parents,” a local source claimed.

According to the police, the exact cause of the girl’s death can be ascertained only after a post-mortem. “And for this to happen, the recovery of the body is very important,” police sources said. Malda Superintendent of Police Alok Rajoria said that thorough investigations into the case have been started.
