According to police, Sharma organised and masterminded the dacoity in which five other persons were involved.
Although Sharma was not present at the time of the robbery in which Rs 14 lakhs was looted from the shop of Debilal Sharma, he had not only planned the entire thing but also had sheltered the gang members at his rented home at Hindmotor locality of Uttarpara in Hooghly. Sharma got Rs 6 lakhs as his share of the money.
“Originally a resident of Rajasthan, Sharma used to masquerade as a priest during the daytime and kept an eye on targets with large amounts of cash. He could easily access the shops as he posed as a priest. We came to know from the CCTV footage that he had done recce of the entire area along with two to three members of the group on the day before the robbery was committed. He had also provided shelter to the miscreants. We had been searching for him for over a year and finally we got a lead after we tracked him down through his mobile phone location and by other means,” said an investigating officer of Kolkata Police.
Police suspect that organised robber gangs from Haryana might be involved as five other accused are still absconding. Police are also investigating whether Sharma and his other accomplices have any past criminal records. The Jorabagan police station had registered a case against him under Sections 392 and 397 of the Indian Penal Code and posters with his picture and other details were put up in the area.
