Bengal poll: Fate of 111 candidates to be decided Sunday

As many as 111 candidates will contest in the nine Lok Sabha constituencies which are going to poll this Sunday.

The nine Lok Sabha constituencies are Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Joynagar, Mathurapur, Diamond Harbour, Jadavpur, Kolkata (South)and Kolkata (North).

Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency comprises seven Assembly constituencies, namely Khardah, Dum Dum (North), Panihati, Kamarhati, Baranagar, Dum Dum and Rajarhat- Gopalpur.

The Trinamul Congress has fielded Prof Saugata Roy, outgoing MP and veteran politician. The CPI-M has fielded Nepal Deb Bhattacharya while Samik Bhattacharya is the BJP’s candidate.

The Congress has fielded Saurav Saha. Prof Roy had contested from the constituency twice in the 2009 and in 2014 Lok Sabha elections, winning both times.

In 2014, Mr Roy won with a margin of 1,54,934 votes. He secured a vote share of 43.30 per cent. Trailing behind was CPI-M candidate Ashim Kumar Dasgupta with a vote share of 29.42 per cent. The BJP candidate, Tapan Sikdar, secured the third position with a vote share of 22.83 per cent while the Congress’ Dhananjoy Maitra secured a meagre 3.06 per cent vote share.

The seven Assembly segments in Barasat Lok Sabha constituency are Habra, Ashoknagar, Rajarhat-New Town, Bidhannagar, Madhyagram, Barasat and Deganga. The TMC has fielded Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar while Forward Block has fielded Haripada Biswas. The BJP candidate is Dr Mrinal Kanthi Debnath while Congress has fielded Ms Subrota Dutta.

Trinamul’s Dr Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has contested Lok Sabha elections twice in 2009 and in 2014, emerging victorious both times. In 2014, Dr Dastidar won with a vote margin of 1,73,141, securing a vote share of 41.80 per cent while Forward Block’s Dr Mortaza Hossain came second with a vote share of 28.03 per cent. BJP’s PC Sorcar was third with a vote share of 23.60 per cent while the Congress candidate Riju Ghoshal trailed with a vote share of 3.23 per cent.

In Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, the seven Assembly segments are Baduria, Haroa, Minakha (SC), Sandeshkhali (SC), Basirhat (South), Basirhat (North) and Hingalgunj. The TMC candidate is actor Nusrat Jahan, the CPI-M’s is Pallav Sengupta, BJP’s Sayantan Basu and Congress’ Quazi Abdur Rahim.

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls TMC’s Idris Ali won with a margin of 1,09,659 votes and a vote share of 38.96 per cent while the CPI-M’s Nurul Huda secured 30.27 per cent. The then BJP candidate Samik Bhattyacharya was third with a vote share of 18.50 per cent while Congress’ Abdur Rahim Kazi ended in the fourth position with 8.08 per cent votes.

The seven Assembly segments in Joynagar (SC) Lok Sabha constituency are Goshaba (SC), Basanti (SC), Kultali, Joynagar (SC), Canning (West), Canning (East) and Magrahat (East). The TMC is fielding sitting MP Pratima Mondal, RSP has fielded Subhash Naskar, the BJP Dr Ashok Kandari and Congress Tapan Mondal.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the TMC’s Pratima Mondal won with a margin of 1,08,384 votes and a vote share of 41.92 per cent while RSP candidate Subhash Naskar finished second with a vote share of 32.73 per cent. the BJP’s Krishnapada Majumder finished third with a share of 9.59 per cent of the vote while Congress Arnab Roy stood fourth with a vote share of 3.26 per cent.

In Mathurapur (SC) Lok Sabha constituency, the seven Assembly segments are Patharpratima, Kakdwip, Sagar, Kulpi, Raidighi, Mandirbazar (SC) and Magrahat (West). The TMC candidate fielded for the constituency is Choudhury Mohan Jatua, CPI-M has fielded Dr. Sarat Halder, BJP Shyamaprasad Halder and Congress Krittibas Sardar.

In the 2014 polls, TMC candidate Choudhury Mohan Jatua won by a margin of 1,38,768 votes and secured a vote share of 49.95 per cent while then CPI-M candidate Rinku Naskar finished second with a vote share of 38.96 per cent. The then BJP candidate Tapan Naskar finished third with a vote share of 5.27 per cent while then Congress candidate Manoranjan Halder was fourth with a 3.95 per cent vote share.

The seven Assembly segments in Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency are Diamond Harbour, Falta, Sathgachia, Bishnupur (SC), Maheshtala, Budge Budge and Metiabruz. The TMC candidate fielded for the constituency is Abhishek Banerjee, CPI-M’s is Dr Fuad Halim, BJP’s Nilanjan Roy and Congress’ Soumya Aich Roy.

In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee won with a margin of 71,298 votes and secured a vote share of 40.66 per cent while CPI-M candidate Dr. Abul Hasnath came second with a vote share of 34.96 per cent. The BJP’s Abhijit Das finished third with a vote share of 16.06 per cent while Congress’ Kamuzzaman Kamar stood fourth with a 5.04 per cent vote share.

The seven Assembly segments in Jadavpur Lok Sabha Constituency are Baruipur East (SC), Baruipur West, Sonarpur South, Bhangor, Jadavpur, Sonarpur North and Tollygunge. The TMC candidate fielded for the constituency is Mimi Chakraborty, CPI-M’s is Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, BJP’s Anupam Hazra while the Congress is supporting the CPI-M candidate.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, TMC candidate Sugata Bose won with a vote margin of 1,25,203 votes and secured a vote share of 46.49 per cent while the CPI-M’s Sujan Chakraborty finished second with a vote share of 36.53 per cent. The then BJP candidate Swarup Prasad Ghosh finished third with a vote share of 12.37 per cent while then Congress candidate Samir Aich stood fourth with a vote share of 2.10 per cent.

The seven Assembly segments in Kolkata South Lok Sabha constituency are Kasba, Behala East, Behala West, Kolkata Port, Bhawanipore, Rashbehari and Ballygunge.

The TMC is fielding Mala Roy, the CPI-M has fielded Nandini Mukherjee, BJP Chandra Kumar Bose and Congress Mita Chakraborty.

In the 2014 polls, TMC candidate Subrata Bakshi won with a margin of 1,36,339 votes and secured a vote share of 37.59 per cent while the BJP’s Tathagata Roy got a vote share of 25.72 per cent, finishing second. CPI-M candidate Nandini Mukherjee finished third with a vote share of 24.24 per cent while then Congress candidate Mala Roy stood fourth with a vote share of 9.88 per cent.

The Assembly segments in Kolkata North Lok Sabha constituency are Chowringhee, Entally, Beleghata, Jorasanko, Shyampukur, Maniktala and Kashipur-Belgachia. The main candidates are TMC’s Sudip Bandyopadhyay, CPI-M’s Kaninika Bose (Ghosh), BJP’s Rahul Sinha and Congress’ Syed Shahid Imam.

In the 2014 polls, the TMC’s Sudip Bandhyopadhyay won with a margin of 96,226 votes and secured a vote share of 36.30 per cent while Rahul Sinha garnered a vote share of 30.37 per cent, finishing second. CPI-M candidate Rupa Bagchi finished third with 20.71 per cent of the vote while then Congress candidate Soumen Mitra secured a vote share of 13.81 per cent.
