In a decision aimed towards empowering street vendors and improving their overall working conditions, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday announced a survey facilitating the allocation of designated spaces for them to set up their shops. Announcing this landmark move, CM through a video message here said,“Since the AAP came to power in the MCD, we have been making one significant decision after another.
“The AAP’s MCD government has taken several major decisions so far and has accomplished a lot of work. Now, the ‘AAP’ government of the corporation has taken another major decision.
It is a great piece of news for all the brothers and sisters who are street vendors in Delhi,” he said. Kejriwal said that the government understands the issues faced by the people who work har along the streets and how difficult it is to work by setting up a street vending cart on
the roadside.
“Street vendors are sometimes harassed by the police, sometimes by committees, and sometimes by officers. We want you to get rid of all these troubles and lead a life of dignity.
Street vendors should also be able to work with dignity and set up their shops,” Delhi CM added. Talking of the surveys, CM has informed that they will be conducted to determine how many shopkeepers are in which area, who sits where, and what types of shops are set up.
After all the information is collected, arrangements will be made for them to set up their shops in a proper manner. However, he also said that the said process will likely take a couple of months, after that it will become smoother for the vendors and no one will be able to demand bribes from them.
CM also highlighted that the arrangements for the street vendors will be made keeping in mind the existing markets and work will be planned in such a way that it does not
other shopkeepers around will not face any inconvenience.
Kejriwal asserted that it was important to support every section of the society and especially those coming from poor backgrounds so that they can lead a better life.
