A security operation in south Kashmir's Pulwama district was called off on Friday after militants managed to escape, police said.

Forces surrounded Batnoor village late Thursday following information about the presence of the militants.

Firing exchanges also took place before the militants escaped, the police added.

The Army has identified the martyred soldiers as Naib Subedar Vipan Kumar and Sepoy Arvind Singh.

The Udhampur district police confirmed that an Inspector of CRPF was killed in the encounter at Chill in Dudu.

Indian Army said that contact was established with infiltrating terrorists and operation is in the process.
