The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) will launch a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation beginning May 1 to demand the completion of Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal so that Haryana gets its due share of water from Punjab.

Addressing a Press conference, leader of Opposition Abhay Singh Chautala said the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state was diverting the attention of the people from the real issue of SYL by raising the question of bringing water flowing into Pakistan.

He said the real issue was the completion of the construction of SYL canal. “Instead of focusing on this, the BJP was trying to inject extraneous and peripheral issues. However, the INLD and the people of Haryana will not be diverted from the real issue and will make every effort to bring Haryana’s share of river water to the state. The ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation is a step in this direction,” Chautala said.

He said while the agitation will be launched from Bhiwani on 1 May, similar agitation will be carried out in other districts Yamunanagar ( 4 May), Nuh (8 May), Kurukshetra (18 May), Fatehabad (22 May), Palwal (25 May and Kaithal). “Ultimately, this agitation will be carried out at each district, block and village. And no jails will be big enough to house the people who would court arrest as part of it,” the INLD leader said.

Earlier, Chautala demanded that the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC) should be dissolved immediately and an investigation into the cash-for-jobs scam be handed over to the CBI following the arrests made in the cash-for-job racket.

He pointed out that after the arrest of eight employees of the HSSC, the contention of the police seeking remand of the accused clearly indicates the complicity of at least member of HSSC, if not more. In the wake of the ongoing investigation it was imperative that the HSSC be dissolved to re-establish the faith of the youth in the system.
